We found a lost temple using maths sent by an ancient Sumerian god | Curator's Corner w. Matt Parker
It's not every day you get to say 'I found a lost, presumed to be mythical, ancient Sumerian temple'. Unless you're curator of ancient Mesopotamia Sébastien Rey. Because he did exactly that - rediscovering the Temple of Ningirsu in Girsu, in Southern Iraq. And he did it by cracking an ancient Sumerian maths puzzle that had stumped archaeologists for over 140-years.
Join Matt Parker and find out how unit fractions and predictive archaeology are 'way better than the golden ratio'.
Huge thanks to Matt Parker for coming along for the ride. You can check out his video with curator Ilona Regulski on the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus here: ua-cam.com/video/g_qbIsltNmQ/v-deo.html
If you've been inspired by Ilona and Matt, and want to learn to read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs you can do so with this video: ua-cam.com/video/LwZB0MsXCjQ/v-deo.html
If you'd like to find out more about how we excavate at Tello, ancient Girsu, you can watch us excavate a cuneiform tablet from the ground, watch it being conserved, translated and delivered to its final home in the Iraq Museum in Baghdad: ua-cam.com/video/dwGmyy2Aabg/v-deo.html

God: To whom it may concern: Your glorified parking garage hasn't been properly zoned and is without permit. Your nieghbors are complaining it's blocking their view of the horizon line, and is an eye sore, as well as a public nuissance. I therefore make urgently demands for it's immediate removal. Oh, and don't bother contacting the complaintants. All further communication between all involved parties has been blocked until further notice. Sincerely, Your One and Only. Peace. Memo: 144

This is what I like about art. It's not always about the art, but the stories behind it. The artist's life, personality, struggles, thoughts, emotions, etc., a reflection of his / her time.. Sometimes they're even more interesting than the art itself!

One other idea is that the wearer of this helmet was not personally involved in a hand to hand combat but instead was worn by a general directing the battle and this helmet was seen by the soldiers there as their leader.

I won all 3 games, BUT he drove me crazy with all the time he knocked me clean off the board! Am I the only one who sees that the face serves two purposes. First, it is a face, but secondly, it is a sword. The mouth is the pommel, the nose is the grip (even the sides are ribbed like a grip) eyebrows are the quillons (guards), the serpent heads are the ricasso, and the body of the snake is the blade with the rear snake head being the tip of the sword.
